Westboro Beach
Ottawa's most popular urban beach on the Ottawa River, with supervised swimming, sandy shoreline, kayak and paddleboard rentals, and a year-round restaurant.
Features
Westboro Beach is Ottawa's most popular urban beach, located along the Ottawa River on the Kichi Zībī Mīkan (formerly Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway). Managed by the National Capital Commission, the beach features a wide sandy shoreline, supervised swimming in summer, and renovated pavilion buildings.
Swimming
The City of Ottawa provides lifeguard supervision from mid-June through late August, typically noon to 7 PM daily. Water quality is tested regularly — check the City of Ottawa website or the Beach Water Quality page before visiting. The beach has a gradual entry into the water, making it suitable for families with young children.
Rentals
In summer, you can rent kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, canoes, and beach chairs right at the beach. It's a great launch point for paddling along the Ottawa River.
Facilities
The renovated Strutt towers house accessible change rooms on the lower level, and the beach area includes picnic tables and volleyball courts. The Surf Shack restaurant operates year-round, and a seasonal café opens during summer months.
Getting There
The beach is accessible by car (parking along the Kichi Zībī Mīkan), by bike via the Ottawa River Pathway, or by OC Transpo bus. It's a short walk from Westboro village along Richmond Road.
Tips
- Arrive early on hot days — parking fills up fast on summer weekends
- Check water quality before swimming at ottawa.ca
- Bring sunscreen and shade — the beach has limited natural shade
- Year-round destination — the pathway and restaurant are open all year, not just summer
