About Andrew Haydon Park
Andrew Haydon Park sits on the Ottawa River in the city's west end, on a wide section of the river known as Lac Deschenes. It's a popular family destination that combines a waterfront setting, splash pad, playgrounds, and walking trails — all with free admission and free parking.
The park was conceived in the early 1970s by Andrew S. Haydon, who served as Reeve of Nepean Township from 1970 to 1978. Under his direction, waterfront land was purchased and spared from development to create the park. It was renamed in his honour in 1979.
What to See and Do
Splash Pad and Playground
The water playground features a pirate ship play structure with water running down the slide, a water wheel with troughs, and climbing structures with running water — well suited to younger children. Multiple play structures are available for different age groups.
Bandshell and Summer Concerts
The bandshell hosts the Summer Sounds concert series by the Nepean Concert Band, every second Wednesday at 7:30 PM during summer months.
Ponds and Wildlife
Two artificial ponds with fountains are home to resident Canada geese and mallards. Bridges and boardwalks connect the pond areas, making for pleasant short walks.
Trails and Cycling
The park is connected to the Ottawa River Pathway — part of the NCC's Capital Pathway system. The pathway runs from the Canadian War Museum through Westboro Beach and Britannia Beach to Andrew Haydon Park and beyond.
Picnic Areas
Picnic tables, shaded areas, and a Green Gazebo are available. Propane BBQs require a city park permit (613-580-2595).
Winter Activities
The park is part of the Britannia Winter Trail network — 17 km of groomed trails between Deschenes Rapids and Andrew Haydon Park for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking.
