Bate Island
A small island park on the Ottawa River near the Champlain Bridge, popular for kayaking, river surfing, fishing, and watching the Champlain Rapids.
Features
Bate Island is a small, forested island on the Ottawa River, connected to the mainland by a short bridge off Island Park Drive near the Champlain Bridge. Managed by the NCC, it's one of Ottawa's hidden gems — a quiet escape from the city with river rapids, mature trees, and plenty of space to spread out.
What to Do
The island is best known for its proximity to the Champlain Rapids. Kayakers and river surfers use the standing wave at the rapids, and even if you're not paddling, watching the rapids from the shore is worth the visit. The island is also a popular fishing spot.
A short loop trail (about 0.8 km) circles the island and takes roughly 10–15 minutes to walk. There are picnic tables, a gazebo-like structure, and lots of space under the shade of mature trees.
Kayaking & River Surfing
Bate Island is a launch point for kayaking and river surfing on the Ottawa River. The standing wave at the Champlain Rapids provides a continuous break for surfing. Ottawa Turbo Tubing also operates from the island in summer, offering guided whitewater tubing trips.
Parking & Access
Free parking is available right on the island — access via Island Park Drive. The island is also connected to the Ottawa River Pathway cycling and walking network.
Tips
- Best in summer — the rapids and activities are seasonal
- Bring a picnic — tables are available but no food vendors on the island
- Watch the rapids — even without equipment, the Champlain Rapids are impressive to see up close
- Mosquitoes — being a forested island near water, bring bug spray in summer
