Tavern on the Island
A casual waterfront restaurant on Bate Island in the Ottawa River with panoramic views of both the Ottawa and Gatineau skylines, gourmet fries, burgers, and draft beer.
Features
About
Tavern on the Island opened in July 2024 on Bate Island — an actual island in the Ottawa River, accessible from the Champlain Bridge. The restaurant offers one of the most unique dining settings in Ottawa: you're surrounded by water on all sides with sweeping views of both the Ottawa and Gatineau skylines.
The vibe is casual and laid-back — an expansive wooden deck with tables and red patio umbrellas, cold beer, and a riverside breeze. Part of The Tavern family, which also operates Tavern on the Hill, Tavern on the Falls, and Tavern at the Gallery.
Menu
Casual fare designed for outdoor dining: burgers, hot dogs, poutine, onion rings, gourmet fries, and ice cream sandwiches. Kids' options include pogos and chicken nuggets. Draft beer, cider, and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks available. Prices are affordable — this is a grab-and-go style spot, not fine dining.
Getting There
Access Bate Island from the Champlain Bridge area. A free parking lot is available on the island. You can also bike in via the Capital Pathway — the island is a short detour from the main trail along the Ottawa River.
Tips
- Seasonal venue — open in summer only
- Arrive before sunset for the best light and views
- Bring sunscreen — the patio is mostly open-air
- Combine with a walk or bike ride along the Ottawa River pathway
- The island itself is a park worth exploring before or after your meal
