Bruce Pit
Ottawa's most popular off-leash dog park — a large, fenced area with wooded trails, open grasslands, and a community atmosphere. Part of the NCC Greenbelt trail system.
Features
Bruce Pit is Ottawa's most well-known off-leash dog park, located in the Greenbelt near Cedarview Road in Nepean. Managed by the National Capital Commission (NCC), it's a large, fenced-in area that combines open grasslands with wooded trails — giving dogs space to run free while owners socialize.
The Trails
A 3.2 km looped trail winds through the wooded area, with about 160 feet of elevation gain. The trail is wide and well-maintained, suitable for all fitness levels. In winter, parts of the trail system connect to NCC cross-country ski trails.
The open grassland area near the entrance is where most dogs play, while the wooded trails offer a longer walk through denser forest. Both areas are off-leash.
Facilities
- Parking: Large free parking lot at the entrance (fills up on weekends — arrive before 10 AM)
- Washroom: One outhouse near the entrance
- Seating: Benches and chairs scattered throughout the open area
- Water: Communal water dishes available (bring your own in summer)
Tips
- Best time to visit: Early morning on weekends to avoid crowds and get parking
- Winter: Trails can be icy — bring boots with good grip. The park is open year-round
- Mud season: Spring (March–April) is extremely muddy. Rubber boots essential
- Recall: Although fenced at the main entrance, trails extend into open Greenbelt land. Good recall is recommended
- Social: This is a very social park — expect lots of dogs and owners. Great for socializing puppies
Getting There
Bruce Pit is on Cedarview Road, south of Baseline Road. From Highway 416, take the Fallowfield Road exit east, then turn right on Cedarview Road. The parking lot entrance is on the left.
