About Mackenzie King Estate

The Mackenzie King Estate is a 231-hectare (571-acre) heritage property in the heart of Gatineau Park, managed by the National Capital Commission (NCC). It was the country retreat of William Lyon Mackenzie King — Canada's 10th Prime Minister and longest-serving PM (1921–48). The grounds are now open to the public for free year-round.

The estate features two Federal Heritage Buildings — the Main House at Moorside (now a day shelter and seasonal tearoom) and Kingswood Cottage — alongside picturesque garden ruins, hiking trails, mature forests, and Kingsmere Lake views.

What to See

  • Moorside House — Main residence, summer tearoom + day shelter
  • Kingswood Cottage — Original cottage (Federal Heritage Building)
  • Garden Ruins — King famously assembled architectural fragments (windows, columns) from sites including the British House of Commons after WWII bombings
  • Kingsmere Lake — Adjacent lake, hiking trails
  • Moorside Gardens — Restored 1920s formal gardens

What to Expect

  • Cost: Free admission to grounds
  • Hours: Open year-round (interior visits seasonal — typically May to October)
  • Picnic: Tables near Moorside cottage
  • Tearoom: Summer-only NCC-operated tearoom in Moorside

Getting There

  • From Gatineau Park south entrance: Take Gatineau Parkway from Boulevard des Allumettières or Alexandre-Taché
  • From Chelsea: Old Chelsea Road → Meech Lake Road → follow Estate signage onto Champlain Parkway
  • Parkway closures: The Gatineau Parkway has seasonal closures (Sundays summer mornings, fall foliage events)
  • Distance: ~25-30 min from downtown Ottawa
