Downtown Ottawa Walking Tour - Must-See Landmarks

Overview

This self-guided walking tour takes you through the heart of Ottawa, showcasing the city's most beloved landmarks. Perfect for visitors and locals alike, the route covers approximately 3-4 km and can be completed in half a day, or a full day if you spend time at each location.

The Route

Start: Rideau Canal

Begin your tour at the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that runs through the heart of downtown Ottawa. In winter, it transforms into the world's largest naturally frozen skating rink. In summer, enjoy walking or cycling along the scenic pathways.

Highlights:

  • Watch boats navigate through the locks at the foot of Parliament Hill
  • Grab a BeaverTail pastry (a Canadian classic!)
  • Photo opportunities at every turn

Walk north along the canal towards Sussex Drive to reach the National Gallery of Canada. The striking glass and granite building designed by Moshe Safdie is a landmark in itself.

Don't Miss:

  • The Maman spider sculpture at the entrance
  • Canadian and Indigenous art collections
  • Free admission on Thursday evenings (5-8pm)

Walking time from Rideau Canal: ~15 minutes

Stop 3: Ottawa City Hall

Head west along Laurier Avenue to Ottawa City Hall. The mid-century modern building features impressive architecture and the scenic Jean Pigott Place public square.

Highlights:

  • Public art installations throughout the building
  • Jean Pigott Place hosts events year-round
  • Free skating in winter

Walking time from National Gallery: ~10 minutes

Stop 4: Ādisōke - Ottawa Central Library (Opening Late 2026)

Continue west towards LeBreton Flats to see Ādisōke, Ottawa's new central library. While still under construction, this joint facility between Ottawa Public Library and Library and Archives Canada will be a must-visit destination.

What to Expect:

  • Modern architecture with Indigenous design elements
  • Connected to Pimisi LRT station
  • Maker spaces, recording studios, and extensive collections

Walking time from City Hall: ~15 minutes
