Hailing from Águeda, Portugal, Danças Ocultas is an accordion quartet with a unique sound, crafted over the past 35 years. The band creates minimalist, lyrical and deeply evocative music with just four diatonic accordions. They tap into folk music, nuevo tango and chamber music to weave delicately captivating soundscapes of what some have called “impressionist folk.”
Their most recent album, Inspirar (2025), earned a spot among the top world music albums in Europe.
Danças Ocultas captivates and charms audiences, creating a sweetly nostalgic atmosphere by striking a balance between traditional and original songs. It’s a far cry from your standard folk song—the band cleaves to its musical roots while embracing a very contemporary approach to its sound. Its songs invite listeners to go on a journey, somewhere between heaven and Earth. Drawing on classical, folk and church music, Danças Ocultas infuses their bellows with a tender yet enveloping sound. There’s no question about it: the accordion is no longer the poor man’s piano. It has endless potential, as proven by this export of a Portuguese music scene in full revival. Danças Ocultas has unlocked something truly innovative and rare—and that’s what makes their sound just so modern and singular.
