Mikinàkonsag - Little turtles

Mikinàkonsag - Little turtles

How do you say “turtle” in Anishinàbemowin? Join Kitigàn Zìbì singer, storyteller, craftswoman and teacher Stephanie Tenasco to explore the lives of freshwater turtles from an Anishinaabe perspective. In this workshop, participants will listen to stories, make a craft, and learn Anishinàbemowin words to describe the natural world in which turtles live. Stephanie Tenasco is renowned as a teacher of Anishinàbemowin, and as an artist, for the quality of her beadwork. She has a busy career as a reference artist for the Manitoba Mukluks manufacturer, a beadwork teacher at the University of Ottawa, and a development assistant at the Kitigàn Zìbì Cultural Centre. Stephanie lives in the Kitigàn Zìbì territory, along with her mom, family and relatives. She is especially dedicated to passing on the Anishinàbemowin language to the very young. This exciting workshop launches our 2026 programming series highlighting the Turtle Incubator Project at Cumberland branch, a partnership with the Friends of Petrie Island and the Canadian Wildlife Federation. Registration recommended. Drop-ins are welcome as space permits. For ages 4-10.
